JOB TITLE: GROCERY DIRECTOR                    
LOCATION: Staten Island, NY (10 minutes all highway off of either the Verrazano, Outerbridge or Goethals Bridges)

REPORT TO: Chief Operating Officer
  • Coordinates, directs, and monitors all aspects of the Grocery Department’s sales, merchandising, and income. This includes merchandising weekly ads, gross profit margins and income, total sales, same store sales, fiscal business reviews, run rates, promotional income, in-store execution programs, the Direct Store Delivery program, and special company programs, including: Annual Trip, Golf Outing, Race for the Cure, calendar program, Los Rancheros, and two Food Shows. Performs contract renewals and negotiations as necessary.
  • Responsible for developing an overall Grocery Budget for same store and total sales, gross profit income/margins, and promotional income based on executive management requirements. Also maintains pricing strategies based on competition and price increases/decreases by zones. 
  • Evaluates and merchandizes the weekly ad programs, which must be consistent with all aspects of sales, gross profit margin percent, and income, which is presented to the sales committee bi-weekly. Also prepares actuals from previous week’s ads and new item presentations.
  • Meet with vendors/brokers on a weekly basis to negotiate the best cost and deals for promotions for the weekly ads. Also negotiate new items and items to be discontinued through SKU rationalization. The categories are, but not limited to, Sugar, Oil, Rice, Tomato Products, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Juice, Salt, and Seasonal Items.
  • Work with marketing, advertising, and vendors/brokers to develop the Urban Meadow private label line. This includes new packaging, old packaging depletion, costs, retails, merchandising strategies, and category analysis. 
  • Work with the current wholesaler to make sure service level targets, special item reserve buy-ins, new item set-ups, and accurate billings are maintained.
  • Develop and maintain a positive relationship with the owners/members of the coop. This includes bi-weekly sales meetings, quarterly gross profit margin projections and results presentations, holiday results presentations, new item presentations, and Direct Store Shipment programs.
  • Manage and develop the Grocery staff to make certain all company standards are being met. This includes ad merchandising, gross profit margin/income, promotional income, presentations, competitive pricing, owner/member relationships, and vendor relationships. Also responsible for developing the categories that each buyer is responsible for. 
  • Work with the In Store Execution Team and Category Management to set up the Elite Vendor Program, new item speed to shelf, plan-o-grams, and SKU Rationalization. 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Accounting/Finance, Merchandising, Business Management, or a related field
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years buying experience, which must include progressively more responsible management experience. Store management background experience a plus.
  • Computer skills – knowledge of Consolidated file a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience managing and developing staff
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Highly accurate and analytical 
  • Must be able to handle multiple responsibilities/projects simultaneously
  • Able to work well under pressure
