POSITION DETAILS:
Overall Goal:
  • Work together with the engineering and deployment teams to enhance the manual processes and automate system deployment and migration.
 
Technical Goals:
 
ECP Engineering:
  • Provide systems engineering support in support of DoS FlexPod implementation.  The program is called the Enterprise Converged Platform (ECP).
  • Create and test new UCSD and Power Shell scripts and associated documentation based on the FlexPod design to enhance the DOS FlexPod implementation.
  • Central systems run in the ESOC and support FlexPod installation.  Distributed systems run at each post and support daily, weekly, and monthly O&M tasks.
  • Specific Deliverables:
  • Review and update documents outlining the manual installation for the ECP bootstrap, network, virtual server, and operating system installs required to automate through UCS Director
  • Create or update remote installer documentation used for installation of the ECP using the automated installation procedures.
  • Provide engineering solutions and documentation on overall ECP system as integrated with Virtual Center, Ops Manager, and other subsystems.
 
Network Consolidation/Regionalization:
  • The purpose of the regionalization of this project is to consolidate IT resources and services for the Department of State’s (DoS) network into hub datacenters locations.  Regionalization of services and staff into regional centers will enable the Department to create greater economies of scale for global IT resources. This project focuses on the technical design and implementation of the regionalized environment, including network, systems and failover configuration.
  • The overall goals of the project are to:
  • Redesign the Department’s overseas environment to better meet the Regional Bureaus’ IT needs.
  • Determine the process for continued regionalization efforts of the type to include roles and responsibilities and costs models.
  • Reduce total costs the Department by reducing the quantity of equipment and people sent overseas, and by deploying overseas personnel to safer, less expensive locations
  • The primary objectives for the project are to:
  • Consolidate resources to regional hub locations
  • Reduce the workload and complexity of systems management overseas
  • Improve consistency and maintain acceptable levels of customer support
  • Reduce security risks for both personnel and sensitive material
